Busy, busy, busy

This is a traditional coat/dress called a Regalia. The originals were made from bird skins, mainly cormorant and puffin. When the weather was dry they wore the feather side in and when it rained the feathers were on the outside for waterproofing. Later on the coats were made from seal skin and now are made from lightweight suede.

These are a few items displayed at the Rec center, made by local people. Peter made the Kings Hat above and is working on the one below. Remember, this is ONE piece of wood, cut, chiseled and bent into shape.

These young girls are working on the full Aleut head-dress. The last night of camp they will wear their apparel and dance for us.

Another group diligently working on their Regalia. Every stitch is made by hand.

This is an almost finished beaded glass ball. The person working on this opted to not have her photo taken, but she was quite proud of work so far in just four nights.

The last night of culture camp there is a potluck and auction of all the crafts made. Only if you want to, you can donate your crafts and they are auctioned off to make money for next years culture camp and supplies. SOme of the items are so beautiful, I think they would be hard to part with. I guess you can always outbid others and buy your own craft back and donate to a good cause all in one.....we'll see!!
